Section 1: From Hanoi to Mai Chau (150 km)

The Journey Begins

Your journey begins in the energetic capital of Vietnam, Hanoi. Although the first section of the trip passes through the industrial suburbs, you should remain calm as you negotiate the traffic. You’ll quickly be leaving the city behind once you merge onto the contemporary Thang Long Highway. The concrete jungle will fade into gorgeous farmland within an hour, allowing the magnificence that awaits to take front stage.

You’ll cross onto Highway QL6 as you drive west. Beautiful scenery along this road serves you a preview of the breathtaking views you will eventually come upon. Take a back-road detour straight after crossing Xuan Mai to escape Hoa Binh’s traffic. Along ATK and DT12B, this other path reveals beautiful rural landscape featuring limestone peaks and clean rivers that will transport you to another universe.

Staying in Mai Chau

Although many visitors choose homestays in the nearby towns, town offers some reasonably priced lodging. While Mai Chau Valley View and Mai Chau Lodge offer a more comfortable lodging with breathtaking views of the rice fields, options like Thai Binh and Viet Hung guesthouses offer neat, reasonably priced rooms. Still, if you want a more immersive experience, think about lodging in one of the stilt homes scattered around the countryside. Exploring Pu Luong Nature Reserve

Section 3: The ‘Lao Loop’ (Canh Nang to Muong Lat, 160 km)

Leaving Canh Nang, you will follow route QL217 and avoid the muddy Ma River banks. As you negotiate mountain passes and deep woods, the serene surroundings overwhelm you. You might come into the odd big goods vehicle carrying timber from the rich jungles of Laos along the road, but traffic is limited and lets you enjoy the breathtaking sights unspoiled.

A little road veers off as you keep westward to get to the lovely hamlet of Muong Lat. After a tough day of riding, this far-off outpost is a wonderful spot to relax. The surroundings are calm, and you will discover basic guesthouses offering kind hospitality. At public tea stations located in restaurants all across the town, be sure to taste the regional delights including fresh tea and Lao tobacco. Perfect for relaxing after a day on the road, the rich tastes of trà lá tươi and the aromatic Lao tobacco produce a distinctive dining experience.

Section 4: Muong Lat to Lang Chanh (140 km)

About 140 kilometers separate your next phase of travel from Muong Lat back toward Mai Chau and forward to Lang Chanh. Early morning in Muong Lat is breathtaking; the vivid green rice paddies sparkle in the mild light while mist blankets the valleys.

The views will captivate you as you bike beside the Ma River. An old lifeline for the area, the river runs between the limestone peaks to produce a scene that is both ageless and peaceful. Riding along route QL15, keep on until you get to Quan Hoa, a tiny village with guesthouses and local restaurants providing filling cuisine. Refuel then keep south toward Lang Chanh. Nestled in a valley, this little town presents a range of food and lodging and is humming with rural business. Section 5: Lang Chanh to Hanoi (190 km)

The last leg from Lang Chanh back to Hanoi is about 190 kilometers as your driving excursion ends. Leaving Lang Chanh, you will travel south toward Ngoc Lac and join the well-known Ho Chi Minh Road, a crucial artery of Vietnam.

Riding the Ho Chi Minh Road takes you via meandering valleys and beautiful scenery. It is a smooth and picturesque road.
