By Bus or By Car

From My Dinh Bus Station in Hanoi, grab a bus headed toward Yen Bai. Tickets cost about 150,000 VND apiece. If you would want to drive, go this way: From Hanoi, aim for Thang Long Bridge and then travel the Noi Bai – Lao Cai Expressway. Turn towards Yen Bai Bridge at Km121+300 and keep straight towards Yen Bai City. The drive runs three to three.5 hours.

Alternatively, follow the Lang Hoa Lac path via Thang Long Boulevard, then right into Highway 21, then travel via Son Tay, Trung Ha Bridge, and Phong Chau Bridge before merging with the Noi Bai – Lao Cai Expressway to Yen Bai.

The trip started with a slow walk down the picturesque path between Pang Cang Village to Ban Moi Village. Under the direction of a vibrant young Hmong local called A Sau, the group set off an adventure full of beauty and learning.

Their first trip was to the magical Ancient Tea Garden. The sheer enormity and count of these centuries-old trees astounded everyone as one was ascending a mild hill surrounded by rows of ancient tea plants. Rich vegetation also surrounded them. A Sau avidly told tales of the life of the local Hmong people and their close relationship with the tea trees given by nature as they wandered.

The highlight of this stop was an old tea tree encircled by a well planned open garden. The owners of the land had gone to tremendous efforts to protect it, therefore making it a friendly place for guests. To accentuate the calm beauty was a little wooden pavilion with a panoramic view of the mountains. If local hosts were available, guests may even savor freshly made Shan Tuyet tea, a great approach to really experience the culture.

The group lingered in the tea garden then moved higher to a location residents refer to as Heaven’s Gate. The little walk revealed a striking change in the landscape. Nestled between mountain peaks, at the summit, they were met with an ethereal perspective of Tap Lang Commune. Against the pure heavens they had just flown across, the forest below was covered in a mysterious white mist.

A Sau took a traditional Hmong flute from this enchanted location and performed a melody resonant with the mountains. Everyone was tremendously impacted by the eerily beautiful song, a memory meant to remain long beyond their trip.

Relaxing in Van Chan Hot Springs

Yen Bai Province is renowned for its natural hot springs, and Van Chan is one of the fortunate recipients of this geothermal gift. Following their lunch at their homestay and down from Heaven’s Gate, the group opted to ride fifteen kilometers to Van Chan in order to relax in its hot springs.

The road was a neat, meandering concrete one with amazing mountain vistas. About 45 minutes later, they arrived at Huong Kim Hot Spring Bath, a well-known location with a range of choices for guests from shared outdoor pools to private rooms and natural spring baths. Prices ranged from 5,000 to 40,000 VND; other services including swimsuit rentals and amenities may be bought.

Choosing the outdoor pool, the group discovered it to be neat and welcoming, with natural hot spring water running continually into the basin formed from stones. Everyone felt rejuvenated after a thirty-minute soak; their tiredness from the lengthy trip melted away.

Suoi Giang Tea Cultural Space – The Happy Village and the Tea Ancestor Tree

The group went back to their homestay to clean as dusk arrived, then headed to the adjacent Suoi Giang Tea Cultural Space – Nahi Village, sometimes known as just “Tea Space.” Combining tea tasting, local cuisine, and traditional events, this privately run facility presents a rich cultural experience.

You can savor a special tea ceremony in a small space meant for meetings. Around a brilliant charcoal fire, they observed expert craftmen making tea and shared its background. The soft sounds of a classic zither improved the atmosphere. This tailored experience made a lasting effect for a cost of 800,000 VND.

The second floor of the Tea Space has a picturesque café looking out over the valley for people looking for lighter drinks. From red, white, and green teas (80,000–120,000 VND per pot) to smoothies and coffee, options run from.

You can also visit the Tea Ancestor Tree, which lies immediately across from the Tea Space, before supper. Approaching an old wooden gate, they trailed a dusty road dotted with tall pomu trees and historic tea plants. Though smaller and less spectacular than the tree viewed before, a stone marker pointed out that the tree had great historical importance for the area.
