History of Thanh Toan Bridge

Thanh Toan Bridge carries with it a rich history that dates back to the 15th century. The story begins when 12 patriarchs of the Tran family, who had followed Vietnamese King Le Thanh Tong, settled in Thanh Toan village in the southern part of Vietnam.

The bridge as we know it today was built in 1776, thanks to the efforts of Mrs. Tran Thi Dao, a remarkable woman from the Tran family who was the sixth-generation niece of the original settlers. As the wife of a high-ranking official under King Le Hien Tong, Mrs. Dao generously used her own wealth to fund the construction of the bridge, which was then donated to the village.

In recognition of her dedication and contribution, King Le Hien Tong granted the village an exemption from many types of taxes. Later, in 1925, Emperor Khai Dinh paid homage to her memory by ordering the establishment of an altar on the bridge to honor her legacy. This sacred gesture further cemented Thanh Toan Bridge’s significance in local history and culture.

Explore the Distinctive Architecture of Thanh Toan Bridge

Thanh Toan Bridge is an architectural marvel that has stood the test of time since its construction in the 18th century. Its design is a fusion of function and beauty, embodying a unique “house above a bridge” concept. The bridge spans 18.75 meters (about 43 feet) in length and 5.82 meters (about 14 feet) in width, offering a picturesque view of the surrounding countryside.

The bridge is divided into seven separate sections, each crowned with a distinctive glazed pipe tile roof, paying tribute to the traditional pagoda style of architecture. These glazed tiles are not only visually striking but also serve as a testament to the craftsmanship of the time. The roof is adorned with intricate soft-curving dragon motifs, their bodies embellished with pearl inlays, which adds a touch of elegance and color to the structure.

Walking across the bridge, visitors will notice the thick wooden platforms and railings that line the sides. These wooden elements, although worn by time, provide a comfortable space for visitors to sit and take in the serene beauty of the surroundings. Unfortunately, the wooden pillars have succumbed to the ravages of time, and ongoing restoration efforts are underway to ensure the bridge remains stable for future generations.

A fascinating aspect of the bridge’s design is its robust construction, with three rows of wooden pillars positioned across six columns. These pillars are securely attached via tenon blocks, which serve to prevent the bridge from sinking or collapsing over time. This thoughtful and functional design highlights the ingenuity of the architects and craftsmen who brought the bridge to life.

Visitors to Thanh Toan Bridge not only witness an engineering marvel but also experience the timeless beauty of the countryside. The tranquil atmosphere, with its lush green fields and quiet rural roads, makes for a peaceful stroll. The surrounding landscape is a perfect reflection of the long-held traditions and simple, serene lifestyle of the people of Hue.
